Detoxing Your Home

If you’ve ever looked into your shed or garage and felt a little frightened by the contents, you are not alone.

Old cleaning products, aerosols, paints, fertilizer, pesticides, fuel; our homes are littered with the leftovers of these and similar products and often we don't know what to do with them, so we keep them in the shed - for years on end.

Sustainability Victoria contracts an external provbider to deliver the Victorian Government’s Detox Your Home program, a free service that enables householders to dispose of potentially dangerous chemicals and a number of other targeted products (paint, household batteries and compact florescent lights) safely and easily without harming human health or the environment.

The program includes a network of permanent Victorian drop-off sites as well as an annual mobile collection service at 31 locations across Victoria.

Nearly 8,000 Victorian households used the service in 2012-13, with 1,082 tonnes of waste collected.

To take advantage of this service, Victorians can go to any of the 31 annual Detox your Home mobile collections held across Melbourne and regional Victoria to safely dispose of their highly toxic household chemicals for free.

These items include solvents, poisons, cleaning products, fertiliser and car care products. See the full list of items that are accepted and not accepted at Detox your Home mobile collections. Please note that mobile collection events do not accept household paint, batteries and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs)- these items can be disposed of for free at permanent drop-off sites across Victoria.
